Digital smile design

Digital smile design plans a cosmetic change on photographs, video and scans of your own face and teeth, then lets you try a preview in your mouth before any tooth is touched.

Seeing it before you decide

Cosmetic dentistry asks you to agree to a change you cannot see yet. Digital smile design narrows that gap. The planned shape of each tooth is drawn on photographs of your own face, checked against your lips, your gum line and the way you smile, and then turned into a mock-up you can wear for a short while in the chair.

You see the length, width and outline of the new teeth in your own mouth, in a mirror and on camera, before a single tooth is shaped.

Why the face comes first

A smile that looks right is in proportion to the face around it. The design takes in how much tooth shows when your lips are relaxed, how the front teeth line up with the centre of your face, and how the gum line runs. Changes are planned from those, not from a catalogue.

What it leads to

The design is a plan, not a treatment. It may lead to veneers, crowns, whitening, aligners or a combination in a smile makeover. Your written plan sets out which, in what order, and what each costs.

It may suit you if

  • You are considering veneers, crowns or a smile makeover
  • You want to see the result before you decide
  • You were unhappy with earlier cosmetic work
  • You have a clear idea, such as longer or more even front teeth, and want to test it

Suitability is confirmed at your examination, never from a web page.

If you would rather wait

A smile design commits you to nothing. You can take it home, show it to family, think about it, and decide later or not at all.

Step by step

What happens at each stage, and roughly how long it takes. Your own timings are set out in your written plan.

  1. Step 1: Consultation

We start with what you like about your smile and what you would change, and check the teeth and gums are healthy enough for cosmetic work.

  2. Step 2: Records

Photographs and short video of your face and smile from several angles, scans or impressions of the teeth, and X-rays where needed.

  3. Step 3: The design

The new tooth shapes are planned on your photographs, in proportion to your face, lips and gum line.

The design follows your features, not a template. Two people asking for the same change can end up with different shapes.

  4. Step 4: The preview in your mouth

About a week or two later

A temporary mock-up of the design is placed over your teeth, so you can see it, smile with it and photograph it.

  5. Step 5: The plan and the costs

If you like it, the design becomes a written plan, with each treatment, its visits and its cost range.

What the cost covers

Included

  • The photographs, video and scans
  • The design
  • The mock-up preview in your mouth
  • A written plan with costs

Sometimes needed, at extra cost

  • The treatment itself, priced in your plan
  • Further rounds of design changes, if the plan changes a lot

Anything extra is explained, with its cost, before it is done.

Risks and recovery

Every treatment carries some risk. These are the ones to know about, and what is normal while you heal.

  • The preview is a close guide, not an exact copy. The final result depends on your teeth, gums and the treatment chosen.
  • The mock-up material is temporary. It can feel bulky and comes away easily.
  • Some planned changes may need more than cosmetic work, such as gum treatment or straightening first.

Ask on WhatsApp
Will my teeth look exactly like the design?

The design and preview are a close guide to the planned result. The finished teeth can differ slightly, because real ceramic, real gums and your bite all play a part. We tell you where that is likely.

Can I change the design?

Yes. That is the point of seeing it first. Shapes and lengths are adjusted until you are happy, before any tooth is prepared.

Is it only for veneers?

No. A design can guide whitening, crowns, aligners, gum contouring and implant-supported teeth, or a mix of them in a smile makeover.

How long does it take?

Usually two visits, one to record and one a week or two later to try the preview.

  • Smile makeover

A smile makeover brings several treatments, such as whitening, aligners, veneers, crowns or implants, into one plan, in an order where each step sets up the next.

  • Ceramic veneers

A ceramic veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth to change its colour, shape or size. It usually needs a small amount of enamel removed, so it is a long-term decision.

  • Teeth whitening

Whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth with a peroxide gel, either in the chair at the clinic or at home with trays made for your mouth. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.
