Aftercare

What to do after your treatment, day by day, and the signs that mean you should call us. Choose the treatment you had.

After a root canal treatment

Root canal aftercare is short, so it lives here.

  • The numbness lasts two to four hours. Do not eat or drink anything hot until it has gone.
  • The tooth may be tender to bite on for a few days. A painkiller you have taken safely before, as the packet says, usually helps.
  • If you have a temporary filling, chew on the other side and avoid hard or sticky food on that tooth.
  • A temporary filling can feel rough or wear down a little. If it falls out, call us to have it replaced.
  • Brush and clean between your teeth as normal.
  • Come back for the crown as planned. A tooth that has had a root canal is more likely to crack until it is covered. Why a crown after root canal treatment.

About root canal treatment

Call us straight away if

  • Swelling in the gum or face after the treatment
  • Pain that gets worse after two or three days instead of better
  • The bite feels high, so the tooth hits first when you close
  • The temporary filling has come out

Go to the nearest hospital emergency department, or call 108 for an ambulance, if you have:

  • Swelling that spreads towards the eye or down the neck
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
